"Value" usually means cheap — but if you want the most energy for your money, the real metric is calories per pound. We combined real UK prices with official calorie data from our database to find which items deliver the most calories for every £1 you spend. (For the record, this is a measure of raw value, not a recommendation to eat 1,400-calorie sausage rolls.) If you're hunting for cheap fast food UK options where the pound genuinely stretches, this is the unvarnished ranking.

Most "best value fast food" lists just sort by price, which tells you nothing about how full you'll be afterwards. A £1 item that leaves you hungry isn't value; a slightly pricier item that actually fills you can be. Calories per pound captures that — it measures energy density against cost, so the items at the top of our table are the ones giving you the most fuel for the fewest pennies.

How we ranked this

We took current UK menu prices from our database and divided the calorie count of each item by its price to get a clean calories-per-pound figure. Every price and calorie value is real and unaltered; the most calories per pound column is simple arithmetic on those two numbers. We've kept the items as listed (including multi-packs, where the price and calories are for the whole pack) so the maths is transparent and reproducible.

Greggs and Domino's dominate value

For pure calories per pound, Greggs is the runaway leader. The 4-pack of Cold Sausage Rolls delivers an enormous 290 calories per pound, and the Triple Chocolate Muffin (246) and Yum Yum (221) aren't far behind. Bakery items are simply dense in calories and cheap to make, which is also why Greggs dominates our cheapest UK breakfast round-up.

For sit-down chains, Domino's pizzas punch hard — a whole Meateor pizza is 2,090 calories, working out to 196 calories per pound. And Five Guys fries are famously huge: the large is over 1,500 calories. See the Domino's menu for current pizza pricing.

What this tells you about value

  • Carbs and fat are cheap energy. The best calories-per-pound items are pastries, pizza and fries — not lean protein.
  • Bakeries beat burger chains on raw value. Greggs occupies most of the top of the table.
  • Value ≠ nutrition. Calories per pound measures energy density, not how good a food is for you. For protein-per-pound the rankings look completely different.

Why bakeries win on calories-per-pound

The reason Greggs lands seven of the top items isn't a coincidence — flour, fat and sugar are the cheapest sources of calories there are, and a bakery's whole model is turning those cheap inputs into hot food fast. Lean protein, by contrast, is expensive per calorie, which is why grilled chicken almost never tops an energy-per-pound table even though it tops a protein-per-pound one. If your goal is the fullest stomach for the smallest bill, this is the cheapest fast food maths in its rawest form.
